Sound like the latch was closed and you reset it by pulling the internal safety pull. My latch on my 2010 just broke in my hand when i squeezed it to open it. The lid wouldn’t close securely unless i slammed it down.

Took the bottom three screw out that held the latch. This turned into an easy fix for the upper latch. It had come out on one side.
Sure Enough Took Latch Out And It Fixed It.
If you unscrew the push button door latch knob, turn it upside down, put it against the latch or some similar piece that has a head, you can make it work. Look under the lid and see if you can loosen the screws that hold the latch on and move it closer to the edge so it will have a better grasp to the bottom latch when you close it. #2 · mar 23, 2012.
